Conversion Rate Optimization is all about understanding what users want. CRO is to increase the percentage of website visitors who take desired action.
Desired actions, are actions that YOU want visitors to take.
As an example, it can be : sending a request for more information, downloading music or PDF files from your website, subscribing for a newsletter or a purchase.
All these actions are considered to be CONVERSIONS.
And the main goal of Conversion Rate Optimization is to figure out, why visitors aren't converting. And fix it!

Change it, monitor ( analyze results). Wait for the result. That is one of actions to optimize conversion rate.
But! Don't get me wrong, Conversion Rate Optimization is much more complex, not just the design.
It is mostly, about research. Research of " buying persona " , " user journey ", surveys, web psychology, analytics and testing.

One of the biggest mistakes companies do ( and it might be crucial ), they don't use Google Analytics. They don't set up funnels and goals in Google Analytics. Because of that, they can not even see where they loose traffic, and why visitors leave without converting. Conversion Rate Optimization doesn't replace Search Engine Optimization.
